Getting married at Merville Beach in
Mauritius
Imagine… Tying the knot on a sandy beach, your family and friends
close to hand, the sky alive with colour as the sun sets over the
Indian Ocean… It may sound like fantasy, but thanks to the
benevolence and hospitality of the Mauritian people, your dream
wedding can become a reality without the stress or bureaucratic red
tape that couples can often experience elsewhere.
Unlike many exotic wedding destinations, Mauritius offers
non-residents a legally binding marriage. Symbolic ceremonies and
vow renewals are also popular, but what truly sets Mauritius apart
is the island's tendency to embrace every visitor as one of its
own. The Mauritian Government introduced a special procedure
simplifying the bureaucracy for non-resident couples, allowing you
to focus on more important things, enjoying each and every moment
of your special day…
Legal requirements
If you're thinking of getting married in Mauritius, here's what
you need to know:
• Each of our resorts has wonderful wedding coordinators, who
will handle your every request with the utmost respect and
consummate skill.
• You should arrive in Mauritius at least 3 days before your
ceremony
• If you've booked a complete wedding package with us, we
require the following documents at least 30 days before the wedding
ceremony: copies of the couples' birth certificates (translated
into English or French, if applicable); copies of the first 3 pages
of both spouses' passports; any documents related to previous
marriages and their respective end, i.e. divorce or widowhood
(translated into English or French if applicable)
• The Marital Status Act specifies that non-residents can get
married the day following the posting of the marriage banns.
However, the couple must obtain a certificate issued by the Prime
Minister's office which certifies that neither of the two are
Mauritian citizens or residents. The resort will send a request for
this certificate, together with the documents listed above, and
will arrange for it to be prepared on your behalf.
• The day before your wedding, you will be required to
collect this certificate in person, and see a lawyer for an
affidavit (a document certifying your identity and the authenticity
of the documents provided); if you booked a wedding package with
us, then one of our team members will accompany you to ensure that
everything goes smoothly.
